Purpose of the Role

The Digital Pharmacy Technician will support the practical implementation of digital initiatives across community pharmacy, helping pharmacies adapt workflows, processes, and systems to support new services and digital requirements.
The role will focus on workflow redesign, implementation support, pharmacy readiness, training, and member guidance, ensuring that digital initiatives are practical, workable, and aligned with day-to-day pharmacy operations. Working across pharmacy operations, digital systems, and service implementation, the role will support pharmacies through ongoing operational and digital change across the sector.

Key Responsibilities

Workflow Redesign & Operational Support
• Support the design and implementation of practical pharmacy workflows aligned with new digital services, including Electronic Record Keeping (ERK) and other ePharmacy developments
• Assist pharmacies in adapting operational processes and workflows to support system and service changes
• Identify operational challenges, duplication, and opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce administrative burden within pharmacy practice
• Contribute to practical implementation approaches that reflect real-world pharmacy operations and patient care workflows

Digital Service Implementation & Rollout
• Support rollout and implementation of digital initiatives, including pilot programmes, testing, readiness activities, and phased implementation
• Assist in identifying and resolving operational issues arising during implementation and rollout
• Work closely with the Digital Business Analyst and wider team to support coordinated programme delivery
• Support validation and testing of systems to ensure usability and practicality within pharmacy settings

SMART Pharmacy & Operational Improvement
• Support progression of the SMART Pharmacy programme and related workflow improvement initiatives
• Contribute to development of practical tools, examples, implementation supports, and operational guidance
• Assist in identifying and promoting operational best practices across community pharmacy settings

Member Support, Training & Readiness
• Provide practical support and guidance to pharmacies adopting new systems, services, and workflows
• Contribute to the development and delivery of practical guidance, FAQs, training materials, readiness resources, and implementation supports aligned with real pharmacy operations
• Support member engagement through forums, consultations, feedback sessions, and awareness initiatives, including areas such as digital adoption, structured data readiness, and cybersecurity awareness
• Assist in identifying member training, implementation, and support needs across the sector

Vendor & Stakeholder Engagement
• Provide practical pharmacy workflow input into vendor discussions, implementation planning, and system design
• Contribute operational insight into system usability, workflow impacts, and pharmacy readiness considerations
• Support testing and validation of workflow changes and implementation approaches
• Identify practical challenges and propose solutions based on real-world pharmacy experience

 

Working Relationships

The Digital Pharmacy Technician will work closely with colleagues across the IPU, particularly within the Digital Health function, supporting the practical implementation of digital initiatives across community pharmacy. The role will involve regular engagement with the Digital Business Analyst, SMART Pharmacy initiatives, Professional Services, Pharmacy Operations, ITSG, and Website & Digital Content teams to support coordinated delivery and member readiness.
Externally, the role will work with community pharmacies, pharmacy system vendors, the HSE, Department of Health, PSI, and relevant pharmacy committees and working groups. The role will support practical engagement, implementation feedback, workflow validation, and operational readiness across a range of digital programmes and initiatives.

Initial Priorities

Initial areas of focus are expected to include:
• Supporting progression of SMART Pharmacy initiatives and workflow improvement activities
• Supporting operational rollout of Electronic Record Keeping (ERK) and related digital services
• Assisting with implementation and adoption of Common Conditions Service (CCS) workflows
• Supporting pilot programmes, implementation testing, and readiness activities
• Contributing to development of practical guidance, training, and readiness materials for members
• Identifying operational efficiencies, workflow improvements, and opportunities to reduce administrative burden
• Supporting pharmacy readiness for future digital services and operational change

Success in the role will be reflected through:

Person Specification

Experience
• Qualified Pharmacy Technician with experience working in community pharmacy
• Strong understanding of pharmacy workflows, dispensing processes, and operational practices
• Experience supporting or adapting to new systems or digital processes in pharmacy
• Experience engaging with colleagues or stakeholders on operational issues

Skills
• Strong practical understanding of pharmacy operations
• Good organisational skills and attention to detail
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain processes clearly
• Ability to support and guide others through change
• Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment

Desirable
• Experience with pharmacy software systems
• Experience supporting training or implementation of new processes
• Interest in digital health and service development
• Familiarity with national pharmacy initiatives or programmes
